Rappard is still here and will be staying for another week since the work is going extraordinarily well. He’s making women spinning and various studies of heads, has already made 10 studies or so, all of which I consider fine.
We’ve talked together quite a lot about Impressionism — I think that you would classify his work as that. But here in Holland it’s hard to work out what Impressionism is actually trying to say. But both he and I are greatly interested in what the present aim is. And it’s certain that unexpected new ideas are beginning to emerge. That paintings are once again beginning to be painted in very different tone from a few years ago.
The last thing I made is a rather large study of an avenue of poplars with the yellow autumn leaves, where the sun makes glittering patches here and there on the fallen leaves on the ground, which are interspersed with the long shadows cast by the trunks.
At the end of the road a peasant cottage, and the blue sky above it between the autumn leaves.
I think that in a year’s time — having spent that year once again painting a great deal and constantly — I’ll change my manner of painting and my colour a great deal, and that I’m likely to become slightly more sombre rather than lighter.

Ellen (c moche), look to me to be French, but what does it mea???n hummm! curios Scottieo the cat.
What I think most interesting about Van Gogh, After one gets over the excitement of his colors, and the ear thing, ear lobe cut off, Is that he had the good since to write all those letters to Theo and a few others to document his paintings, I suppose he knew after working 7 years at Gp Gallery, That this would of course make his paintings a good investment as time passed (they will Shirley remember me when Im Dead and gone) “Van Gogh” or something close to this), I two think this important as an artist, I have began to do the same, I’ve painted around 15 large paintings on glass for my Gallery in the last few weeks and been working on them all day!, The ones on glass are just to show in the Gallery, I will of course paint them all on canvas in the very near future and possibly brake the glass ones, The first 4 are size, 31x 23 inch, The largest at the moment, wooden frames, 2 painted on glass painting frames I had, and 5 size 15×32 inch with metal frames etc.
I cant help but to think “hore hall” not sure why

Also, I would like to ask, what was the date that Vincent start signing his paintings with the u type v “Uincent” signature, I noticed the older paintings are signed Vincent, but when did He first start signing the paintings “Uincent” Thanks in advance!
I was thinking 1888 but not sure!
Also, Does the coarse type canvas Vincent got from Tasset’s look any thing like the jute?
if =-= was over each other, diden’t work with my copy and past! its about 3/8 wide, IM not sure how long it may have run in the jute canvas
I think its so cool that the Van Gogh Museum added this Blog, COOL!
I know of a van Gogh painting that was painted on this jute, and there is a 3/8 of an inch stitching flaw in the canvas, it look like the stitching flaw would run also in some of the other painting of V.G.or P.G, that they did in 1888 if one added up all the paintings Van Gogh and P G did on this jute canvas in 1888 how many feet do you think there would be of known paintings on jute, in other words, if one took all the paintings that V.G and P.G. did on this jute canvas what would the footage be, I am trying to see how much of the jute paintings are known!? and if the others with the stitching flaw are known? etc., thanks in advance! Scott
do they add up to 65 feet?

looks a little kind of like this!
Hi Scott,
Indeed, shortly after Gauguin arrived in Arles he bought some jute which he and Van Gogh shared. They both cut their canvasses from this stock. We’re not sure what you mean by “a flaw in the stitching”. All there’s to be known about the canvas shared by Gauguin and Van Gogh is published in the appendix section of the Gauguin-Van Gogh exhibition catalogue written by Kristin Lister et al. (The Art Institute of Chicago/ Van Gogh Museum 2001). Hopefully this will answer your question.
I read where Vincent painted some of his painting on the jute canvas, P. G. purchased when he stayed the 6 weeks with Vincent, 65 feet of it! I would like to know witch of these have a flaw in the stitching? do you know witch of the paintings that has a flaw in the canvas? Thanks in advance!

One can’t help find the last phrase in this portion of letter rather amusing, if not, ironic.
